Dear Members, Partners and Supporters:

In light of ongoing and growing restrictions to curb the spread of COVID-19 and the uncertainty as to when this health crisis will subside, after careful consideration, EFC’s Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 EFC Conference, which had been scheduled for late May. We were all excited to convene in beautiful Kelowna, British Columbia, and our plan is to do so next May for our 2021 Conference. We are working with our venues to confirm dates and will let you know as soon as we can so that you can mark your calendars well in advance. We look forward to seeing you there!

Our sincerest thanks to our Conference Advisory Committee, noted below, who had worked hard to put together a thought-provoking program exploring how philanthropy can help advance solutions towards a sustainable future.

  • Kariann Aarup, de Gaspé Beaubien Foundation
  • Kris Archie, The Circle on Philanthropy and Aboriginal Peoples in Canada
  • Jennifer Canham, The W. Garfield Weston Foundation
  • Margaret Herriman, Max Bell Foundation
  • Ashley Hardill, Coast Funds
  • Caroline North, North Family Foundation
  • Hedy Rubin, Real Estate Foundation of BC
  • Carolyn Scotchmer, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation
  • Andre Vallillee, Metcalf Foundation
  • Wendy Vanasselt, Wilburforce Foundation
  • Karen Wilkie, Carthy Foundation

In the coming weeks, we will be working, together with this Committee, to explore the possibility of delivering particular ‘time-sensitive’ content planned for the conference digitally.  We will be sure to keep you notified via our member listserv, website and social media.  Certain aspects of our program may be able to be deferred to next year’s conference, so we will be considering that as well. We also recognize that our conference is a key engagement opportunity for our members to connect, share and network so we will be exploring alternate ways for this to continue as well.

Please note that we are planning to hold our Annual General Meeting virtually as this is a mandatory meeting that we must undertake before the end of June.  We will be in contact by separate e-mail once arrangements are in place.

On a more practical note, if you had already registered for the conference and require a refund, please send a request to Redmond Chambers ( and he will make arrangements accordingly.  However, if you are in a position to enable EFC to use these funds to offset incurred costs or to apply to other programs, that too would be much appreciated.  As you know, COVID-19 is having challenging implications for the charitable sector writ large and EFC is no different.

Thank you again for your understanding. We wish everyone good health during these challenging times, and hope that you are all able to find time to get outside as the spring weather finally arrives.

Should you have any questions or wish to discuss any of this further, please do not hesitate to contact us.

With appreciation,

Thea Silver, Interim Executive Director
James Littley,Chair, Conference Advisory Committee and Member, Board of Directors
