What is the environmental grants database?

EFC has collected environmental grants data (2022 and 2023) from EFC members and other environmental funders. This environmental grants database offers users the ability to dive deep into environmental funding data across Canada.

Use this database to:

  • Search funders you want to collaborate with and/or learn about
  • Search for grantees you are interested in funding
  • Identify gaps in funding in environmental areas, provinces, and/or communities
  • Bolster your research capacity by using the database to answer research questions

By default, all EFC members and data providers have access to the anonymized version of the database, in which funder names are hidden. If you would like to view a de-anonymized version of the database, please complete the request form. Access is granted for a 24-hour period.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Nancy Moniz.

Data Security

In order to keep the data secure, please do not:
  • Take screenshots of the database
  • Share links to the database
  • Review the database in an unsecure manner (i.e., using a public computer)

What Data is Available?

The database contains over 4700 grants from 80+ funders and 1000+ grantees.

Here are the current years we have data on:

  • 2022
  • 2023

The following data are available in the database:

  • Anonymized funder name (de-anonymized by request)
  • Funder name – by request
  • Grantee name
  • Grant dollar amount in CAD
  • Grant title and description
  • Environmental Category (keywords):
    • Climate: Grants focused on migrating the effects of climate change and on alternative energy sources
    • Conservation: Grants focused on protecting, preserving natural environments
    • Food & agriculture: Grants focused on supporting food production and framing
    • Environmental education: Grants focused providing education on environmental matters in formal settings and beyond
    • Pollution/waste reduction: Grants focused specifically on tackling pollution and toxics, and promoting waste reduction practices (circular economy)
    • Indigenous work: Grants that have been identified by the funder and/or by keyword search that are either led by Indigenous communities or provide support to Indigenous communities (crosses over with other environmental categories)
    • Other: Grants that do not fit into the categories above
  • Geographic focus of grant
  • Funding restriction (programming/unrestricted)
  • Length of grant (single-year/multi-year)
  • Reporting requirement from funder (yes/no)

Things to Keep in Mind

About the data

  • The aggregated data provides insight into high-level trends rather than complete accuracy, as several grants are double counted in more than one geography and/or environmental category.
  • The data does not provide a complete picture of all environmental grants in Canada, as not all environmental funders have contributed to this database. We hope to see a year-over-year increase in the number of environmental funders who are participating in this collective effort.

About the database

  • A software limitation does not recognize special characters in a grantee, funder or grant name and will replace the special character with a question (?) mark.
  • Scrolling on a list of grants will only move the list. To move the full webpage, click on the page outside the window of data.
  • If you are not seeing data, this indicates that there are no grants that match the criteria you selected. You can reset the filter to start your search again.

How do I use the Database?

“Dashboard” View

Use this view to get quick and high-level insights presented as graphs:

  • Overview
  • Geography
  • Category
  • Indigenous-focus

“List” View

Use this view to take deeper-dives into grant details.

How to Use the Dashboard View

For most users, the dashboard view (i.e., bar graph) will be where they start.

You can select filters located along the top of the graph and can combine filters to narrow down your search results. To reset individual filters, click on the selected filter or reset all filters at once by clicking the “Reset” button (that button is hidden under “More”).

Dashboard data is available for the following:

  • Database Overview

Provides a quick summary of the number of grants, grant dollar amounts, and records of grantees in the database.

Example: To search for information about conservation grants in Quebec awarded in 2023 > Select Quebec in the geographic focus filter, select conservation in the environmental category filter, and then select 2023 in the year filter.

Available filters: environmental category, year, geography, funding amount range, grantee, reporting requirements, and length of grant

  • Grantees/Funders Across Geography

Provides a bar chart that breaks down the grant dollar amounts in different geographic regions.

Click on a bar in the graph or click the arrow in the top right corner of the graph to see its underlying parts.

Example: To search how much multi-year funding was provided to grantees working on climate projects across the Yukon and Northwest Territories in 2022 > Select multi-year in the length of grant filter, select climate in the environmental category filter, select Yukon and Northwest Territories in the geographic focus filter, and then pick 2022 in the year filter.

Available filters: year, environmental category, funding amount range, grantee, funder (only available in the de-anonymized version), restriction, length of grant, and reporting requirements

  • Environmental Grants By Category

Provides a bar chart that breaks down the grant dollar amounts by each category.

Click on a bar in the graph or click the arrow in the top right corner of the graph to see its underlying parts.

Example: To search the amount of funding given in the form of single-year restricted grants in 2022 and 2023 > Keep the year selection untouched, select single year in the year filter, and then select restricted in the restriction filter.

Available filters: year, environmental category, grantee amount, grantee, funder (only available in the de-anonymized version), restriction of funding, length of grant, and reporting requirements

  • Indigenous-focused Grants

Provides a bar chart that breaks down the grants tagged as having an Indigenous focus. Two charts are available: One focused on geography and the other on the environmental category.

Click on a bar in the graph or click the arrow in the top right corner of the graph to see its underlying parts.

Example: To search for all grants with an Indigenous focus in all categories except environmental education > Select the environmental education and then select “the environmental category is not” at the bottom of the filter.

Available filters: year, environmental category, grantee amount, grantee, funder (only available in the de-anonymized version), restriction, length of grant, and reporting requirements

How to Use the List View

In the “List” view, there are two sets of filters available: top menu filters (year, length of grant, geography, etc.) and the “Filter” button on the top right of the page.

The “Filter” button provides a powerful boolean search (i.e., search that can use AND, OR, NOT logic to target search results).

Examples of when to use boolean search:

  • Create new categories using a keyword search (filter grant descriptions)
  • Exclude certain keywords from current selection (filter grant descriptions)
  • Search for grants of a certain amount (filter grant dollar amount)

How to view individual grant details

To view grant details, click on “open” when hovering over the grant name. A side panel will appear with additional information for that grant.
