The Oceans Collaborative (OC) is an active group of environmental funders who share the overarching goal of restoring and protecting healthy, productive oceans and coasts in Canada. We focus on supporting Indigenous leadership, building stewardship and governance capacity, and engaging coastal communities and constituencies as key avenues to deliver positive outcomes for marine ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.

We are committed to advancing trust-based philanthropy and collaborative grantmaking. We rely on the advice and leadership of Indigenous organizations and community partners to guide our work.

For more information on how we work together, please see our Terms of Reference.

OC meetings:

  • Occur monthly, 90-minutes each
  • OC members take turns chairing the meetings
  • Supported by: Lara Hoshizaki, Oceans Collaborative Program Consultant; Devika Shah, Executive Director; and Josh Snider, Program Director

Learning together – Samples of past webinars and projects:

  • Making Connections: A Conversation among Complementary Collaboratives
  • Clam Garden presentation
  • ReConnect Landscape Scan
  • The Learning Journey with The Circle on Philanthropy, and related Upwelling Learning Agenda
  • SeaChange stakeholder map
  • Aaron Heidt’s comparison of Canada’s marine conservation tools

Oceans Fund:

  • Oceans Fund Granting Process: This internal document is intended to outline the full cycle of the granting process, from initial project identification through to final reporting, consistent with the OC’s Terms of Reference. It is understood that our processes are dynamic and may change over time, and that this document may be updated as they evolve.
  • Oceans Fund Dashboard: The OC developed a comprehensive dashboard to complement its goal of uniting funders and resources to increase overall ocean conversation grantmaking in Canada. The dashboard provides all OC members with an easy-to-use visual reference of how the Oceans Fund has been distributed across Canada, the strategies it has supported, and the primary beneficiaries of the work.
